What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin (BTC) is a cryptocurrency, a virtual currency designed to act as money and a method of payment outside the control of any individual, group or entity, thus eliminating the need for third parties to be involved in financial transactions.  It is rewarded to blockchain miners for validating transactions and can be purchased on various exchanges.
  In August 2008, the Bitcoin.org domain name was registered.  It was created by Satoshi Nakamoto and Marty Malmi, who worked with Anonymous Nakamoto to develop Bitcoin.
  In October 2008, an individual or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto announced on the cryptography mailing list at metzdowd.com: "I am working on a new electronic cash system that is completely peer-to-peer, with no trusted third parties."  : Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” published on Bitcoin.org, this now famous white paper would become the Magna Carta for how Bitcoin works today.

On January 3, 2009, the first Bitcoin block was mined—Block 0.  It is also known as the "Genesis Block" and reads: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks," possibly evidence that the block was mined on or after that date.
  Bitcoin rewards are halved every 210,000 blocks.  For example, in 2009 the block reward was 50 new bitcoins.  On May 11, 2020, the third halving took place, dropping the reward to 6.25 bitcoins for each block discovered.  The next halving is expected to happen sometime in 2024, bringing the reward down to 3.125 bitcoins.
